The 1st Brazilian Conference on Synthetic Biology (CBBS), held on August 2, 2024, at SENAI – Biotechnology, in São Paulo/SP, brought together the country’s leading experts and researchers to discuss and showcase the latest advancements in synthetic biology.
Organized by SynBioBR in collaboration with the SENAI Institute of Innovation in Biotechnology (ISI Biotecnologia) and the Brazilian Synthetic Biology Network, the event sought to foster knowledge exchange while uniting Brazil’s key stakeholders to accelerate synthetic biology research and innovation.
Check out some highlights from the 1st CBBS below!

The CBBS made history with the debut of the Brazilian Synthetic Biology Network -a bold step toward uniting the nation’s brightest minds in synthetic biology. This groundbreaking effort cements Brazil’s place on the world stage as an innovator shaping the future of the field.
With a total of 100 attendees, the event drew a diverse audience, including:
– 30% Professors and PhD Researchers
– 30% Graduate Students
– 25% Undergraduate Students
– 15% Industry Professionals and Startups
The conference featured renowned experts who delivered four keynote lectures:
- – Enabling the Circular Economy via Gas Fermentation – Marilene Pavan, LanzaTech Inc.
- – Automated Design of Programmable Microfluidic-Based Microbial Communities – Samuel Oliveira, North Carolina A&T State University
- – How Do You Build an Industrial Biofoundry and Actually Make Money Out of It? – Massimo Merighi, Lesaffre Bioengineering CoE
- – Metabolic Engineering for Renewable Chemical Production – Ane Zeidler, Braskem S.A.
The CBBS complemented its lecture program with a vibrant poster session featuring thirty cutting-edge research projects. The works “Engineering an Industrial Microbial Platform for Monoethylene Glycol Production from Renewable Sources” by Ícaro Fier and “Bioconversion of Glycerol to 3-Hydroxypropionic Acid via the β-Alanine Pathway in E. coli” by Adilson José da Silva were awarded as the best poster presentations.
The event also included seven oral presentations, with “Genetic Engineering of Highly Efficient Amylases in Industrial S. cerevisiae Depletes the Need for Exogenous Enzyme Addition in Corn Fermentation” by Lara Isensee Saboya de Sousa from the Genomics and BioEnergy Laboratory – LGE (Unicamp) taking 1st place.

The CBBS was made possible thanks to the essential support of partner institutions and companies, particularly the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) and the Dean of Graduate Studies at Unesp (PROPG), as well as contributions from Promega, Biolinker, and Exxtend, whose backing was crucial to the event’s success.
With 10 hours of programming, the conference set a new benchmark for synthetic biology in Brazil, fostering an environment of collaboration and innovation. The launch of the Brazilian Synthetic Biology Network and the discussions held during the event pave the way for a future of greater integration and scientific progress in the field.
